Blue & Mako Shark Dive

Blue & Mako Shark Diving in Cape Town is not for the faint hearted, but for those of you who love an adrenaline rush, this experience will not disappoint.

Get up close and personal with arguably one of the prettiest deep sea ocean predators, the Blue Shark and one of the fastest fish in the world, the Mako.

Blue and Mako Sharks are very curious and extraordinary animals. They can often come up very close to you, sometimes bumping into you or your camera.

It is therefore imperative that you are comfortable with close encounters with a bold animal as well swimming in the open ocean.

Pelagic sharks are not always easy to find. This means that some chumming is involved to draw the them out to the diving location. They can also be very skittish and therefore encounters may be short.

You don't need to be a certified diver to dive with these sharks, but you must be in good physical condition. Swimming and snorkelling skills are important, as you will be snorkelling if you are not a certified scuba diver.

Find out more about the Trip

About the Trip:

You start the day by meeting at the Simon's Town Pier where you will be met by the crew.

Shortly thereafter you will board the boat, check your dive gear and receive a briefing on the dive and safety on board the boat.  After approximately 2 to 2.5 hour journey to the dive location, approximately 40 kms south of the Cape Peninsula. You will have ample opportunity to take in the stunning views of Cape Point as it comes into focus.

The Dive:

On arrival at the dive location, the crew will then begin to chum the waters luring the elusive Blue and Mako Sharks to come out and play. It is then a waiting game as you wait for the first sharks to arrive. During the wait your dive guide will provide you with valuable insight into the behaviour of these magnificent animals and also how to interact with them underwater.

When the first shark is spotted, divers will be allowed to slip into the water for a snorkel. Once there are a few more you will be able to scuba dive with them for about 60 - 120 minutes at 5 meters (this is dependent on how long they stick around).

Keeping the bait drum as a reference point at all times it is imperative that you do not exceed 8 meters in depth as you are out in the blue with depths reaching 500 -1000 meters. Despite visibility on most occasions being 10 to 50 meters it is extremely important to stay with the group to avoid any unnecessary risk.

Food and Drink:

A light lunch including snack and cool drinks will be available on board the boat.

Safety:

The safety of our customers on every Dive Trip is of utmost importance to us.

The Operators we deal with have an unblemished Safety Record and carry out regular safety checks. Diving with Sharks has become an important part of Eco-Tourism in South Africa so ensuring your safety also ensures the continued survival of these magnificent animals.

Be sure not to touch any sharks in any way whatsoever, whether it’s intentional or accidental. The best way to safely dive with sharks is to always be aware of your position in the water and where you are kicking.

Being in complete control of your buoyancy will help you achieve this. Ensure that you always keep eye contact with any sharks that approach you. Make sure you do not corner any sharks or make them feel boxed in where they may react instinctively by biting because they feel threatened.
